We’ve known Chris for around five years and in that time, in a quiet and highly effective way, it’s clear that Chris made high performance truly personal. He’s continually looked to see how he can be better at what he does and for a leader of his experience, that’s a remarkable thing – it shows that he knows he’s not the finished article and that’s one of the characteristics of great performers.
When things didn’t go according to plan – never once did we witness Chris apportioning blame elsewhere – instead his response to something that didn’t go to plan was to seek to learn from it and to accept responsibility for his part in it. It’s typical of Chris that we’d have to work hard to persuade him to take credit for his part in the great success story that is AXA Claims.
It’s clear that there’s a legacy that’s been created in AXA Claims and that a tipping point was reached a while ago in terms of culture. When we think back to the time before Chris sponsored and championed the work on high performance, that change is quite remarkable and it would not have happened without him.
Chris’ role in this was so notable because he had little or no exposure to many of the high performance concepts at that point yet he was still brave enough to champion the work. That meant that people believed in him and would follow him – and though it hasn’t always been easy, Chris has been totally consistent in striving to do the right thing – not to be a paragon of virtue, but to always strive to be the best he can be. We’re proud to welcome him into the Hall of Fame.
